After the conference
A web developer friend of mine is thinking about conference "back channels." Folks who attended AGDC this year (where the Twitter traffic was heavy and constant, and #agdc09 was everywhere) might want to participate in a brief survey he's conducting on, I guess, making it easier to find and participate in.

A Quick Review of "GDC Austin"

Austin Game Developer, eh?
It's interesting that I never heard it actually referred to as GDC Austin; the old names, AGC and AGDC, are still fresh in people's minds.

Conferences and Swine Flu
I missed attending PAX this year, because we've been pretty busy at work... perhaps that's a good thing. I've been hemming and hawing about the extent to which I want to participate at the conference in my own backyard, but now... well, a lot of people I missed seeing at PAX will be there. Possibly with the flu.
I will try to see at least a few people coming into town for AGDC, but preferably outside the context of the conference itself :-)

What Are Programmers?
Yesterday evening I got an email announcing the GameX Industry Summit CFP, but I was kind of surprised by the description: "Our summit is structured in a two-track format, with a 'Right Brain' Creativity Track and a 'Left Brain' Leadership Track." The latter track is clarified to mean that "The Left Brain track will reveal the best practices, business strategies and production methodologies which result in successful, shipped titles. This track can include appearances by studio heads, producers and notable games industry businesspeople."
It makes sense to have a track centered on the creative side of game development, and it makes sense to have a track covering the business side of game development. I can even see some logic in not inviting programmers to a conference like this, the same way that there are sometimes events that are less interested in the business side of making games, events specifically for programmers, and so on.
But I'm a bit hung up on a conference that separates a conference based on lateralization of brain function such that marketing is a left-brained activity. It also seems to convey that, since they are covering the entire brain somewhere in the conference, they are covering the entire development process, and all the different tasks people do in making a game.
Perhaps it's just my left hemisphere insisting that everything adds up correctly, perhaps it's seeing my discipline left out in the cold with the implication that it doesn't even exist... but the good news is that I don't have any reason to put effort into a proposal for the summit, nor do I need to consider attending. :-)

Can they just pick a name?
I just noticed the LOGIN '09 Areas of Interest section - I looked before and either missed them, or they weren't up yet. Ever since the beginning of last year I've had a collection of slowly-evolving session ideas, and it looks like a lot of them fall into the areas of interest this time around. I must be ahead of the curve. :-P
I read from Joe Ludwig that they were accepting session proposals starting Friday, but apparently that's changed since the main site now says November 24.
